Beginning from 2007, the authorities of the Wielkopolska Region systematically develop the GPSwielkopolska project, aimed at the satellite navigation technology in tourism. The publication of free GPS tracks of main cycling routes of Wielkopolska in Internet aroused huge interest among the guests of the Tour Salon 2007 trade fair in Poznań. Taking into consideration the systematic approach towards the topic, the Wielkopolska Region appeared to be the pioneer in this field in Poland as well as one of the first regions in Europe.

The success of the innovative enterprise prompted its originators to continue the project and to extend its scope systematically. Nowadays – again, as the first region in Poland and one of the pioneering regions in Europe – we offer You a free topographical GPS map of the Wielkopolska Region. It can be downloaded directly from this site. We are working on a definitive www.gpswielkopolska.pl portal, which, in future, will be entirely devoted to the satellite navigation in tourism.

The GPSwielkopolska map is based on the topo Map Level 2 (1:50 000) thanks to the courtesy of the Marshal of the Wielkopolska Region, its administrator. Extraordinary exactness and imposing database of the initial material let our specialists to work out the map, which quality easily surpasses any commercial offer. Apart from the content, typical for any topographical map, as: roads, paths, lakes and rivers, contour lines and other elements used for orientation – it is additionally enriched with the net of main cycling GPS tracks, which are routable in the same way it is known from typical car GPS devices. The tourist trail database will be systematically complemented.

The whole process – beginning from the compilation of the GPSwielkopolska map to GPS format, throughout graphic elaboration to publication in the Internet – was 100% cost free, without generating any expenses from the tax payer’s pocket. The whole project has a typical promotional character and will be supplemented with another free products which will be aimed at making the tourist offer of the Wielkoposka Region much more interesting.
